Preparing A Eulogy

"Eulogy" is a word originated from the Greek where it means praise. A eulogy not allows the funeral to be much more meaningful but also allow the bereaved family members to immerse themselves in the whole gamut of emotions they might be feeling upon the demise of their loved ones. Immersing in the emotions and accepting them is an important step for closure.

A eulogy should allow the audience to know more about the decedent's character and, or achievements in life. It could be a poem, a song or just a speech.

The main thing about a eulogy is to sum up a person's life and to add little details about the person that is unique to him or her. A few questions to help you get going on preparing a good eulogy are as follows:

  1. How has the decedent influenced you in your life?
  2. 3 Main takeaways from the way the decedent has lived his or her life.
  3. Usual routine that is unique to the decedent (e.g. Ahma always cooked half boiled eggs for us on our Sunday get togethers)
  4. Usual phrase that decedent uses.
  5. How much the decedent meant to you.
  6. What you miss about your loved one now that he or she is no longer around.

Be as specific as you can and inject some humour if circumstances allow it. There is no one fixed way to prepare a eulogy but a good eulogy is often honest and sincere. What matters most is not what you have to say but it is how you say it. Not all of us are natural speakers so do not be too nervous about it. You can start with a memory or begin with a poem that aptly sums up the decedent's life.
